Rhetorical Analysis

Introduction

Wang Qian, Ploskić Adnan, and Holmberg Sture (2017) emphasize that the study evaluates the impacts of radiator designs and geometries. Their purpose is to map the thermal efficiency and performance differences of the radiator types studied. The biggest reason for choosing this article is that this article reflects the great practicality of an engineering article. As all we know, Rhetorical essay is not to support or critic an argument presented in a text, but it is meant to discuss how the argument is made and whether the approach used to make it is effective. In this research paper, the author uses a lot of experimental data and analyzes the improvement requirements of the home radiator, and discusses this article from the audience, usage, and other aspects. Reflect that this is a research paper worth studying.

Audience

In this research paper, “The aim of this work is to map the thermal performance results of different hydronic radiator designs and geometries in existing Swedish multi-family houses. The focus was on comparing the exergy performances of different radiator designs operating under various climate conditions in Sweden.” The paragraph not only indicates the purpose but also points out who is the audience. They are the people who have the radiator at home in Sweden because the article analyzes the performance of differently designed radiators based on the Swedish climate. This research paper will be a good reference for users and those who are going to buy radiators. And the audience also could be the radiator designers. In the paper, many data of the radiator in the article are the results obtained through experimental verification. In other words, the information in the article is worthy of reference by designers.

Authors

The paper was written by three authors, Wang Qian, Ploskić Adnan, and Holmberg Sture. They are all having Doctor Degrees and working at college. Wang Qian is an associate researcher in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional with 10 years of experience in various types of public and private projects. Ploskić Adnan, he is a PhD researcher in the KTH Royal Institute of Technology Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and engaging in the technology of Low-temperature heating, Thermal comfort, Energy-efficiency in buildings. And the last one also comes from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology Department. He is a full professor in the Technology Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, he has published 3 other highly influential articles on the civil environment. All three authors have a very wide range of professional civil engineering knowledge so that this report has strong reliability and influence.

Exigence

In this paper,  it showing “Despite the long history and mature market of various types of radiators in Sweden, there is still limited knowledge and even less concrete evidence regarding the performance differences between different radiator types. More importantly, it is still not scientifically proven that, given the same surface area, a more compact radiator design will surely yield higher thermal efficiency. If this is in fact true, how big are the differences inefficiency?” (line 1-4, paragraph 4) which’s the urgency that is driving the research is in the current commercial market, there is a lack of reference data and information on the performance comparison of radiators. And the urgency is explicit in the document. Because in the article, the authors have made it clear that writing this article is to fill the current market without information about the performance of various radiators. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out the next experiment.

Conventions

The genre of the paper is the research paper. The language is clear and logical, the introduction and abstract straightly point out the writing purposes and explain what the topic is about. On the other way, this article used the formal section too. The whole article is divided into 15 sections, mainly including the unique methods of introduction, abstract, objection, methodology, and conclusion research reports. These are the main features of the writing of the research report. The advantage of using this writing technique is that readers can easily recognize that this is a research paper, and can timely understand what the article describes.

Appeals

First of all, this research paper fills the current market understanding of radiator performance but also reflects the contribution of civil engineering to social construction. Then, this thesis was written by 3 professors with senior knowledge in civil engineering. They have a fairly high reserve of civil engineering knowledge and are authoritative. Finally, the whole article is clearly organized, the experiment process is detailed, and the results are also convincing. It is civil engineering literature worthy of reference.

Conclusion

After I learned from analyzing the research paper, I know using the formal sections makes the writing content more convincing and the content expressed is more complete. At the same time, I also realized that using the knowledge we have learned to provide better help to this society, and to contribute our own strength to make the society better, is also the purpose of why we learn.
