Self-Assessment

In this class, I learned a lot of knowledge that I had not been exposed to before. It gave me a deeper understanding of the engineering discipline. In this class, my favorite part is peer view, which greatly reduces my mistakes in writing, because my classmates in the same group help me to point out my mistakes in grammar or spelling, and they also give me a lot of inspiration in writing. In general, the teacher guided me in the direction of writing, and my classmates gave me the courage to write.

At the beginning of this semester, showing us used most of the rhetoric in the writing correctly, which makes the writing more organized. In the past, it was hard to select all the thinking of writers by the rhetoric. However, after the practice, I rediscovered the way to use rhetoric. In my writing, I would like to put the rhetoric into several sections, write subtitles (like audience, stance, or introduction) before I start new rhetoric in the next paragraph. Using this format, it is hard to miss the rhetoric that  I forget to describe in the writing. When I look for and read the resources, I always could relate it to that rhetoric I want to write. During the research process of choosing and judging, it’s not only helped me figure out if the text matches the rhetoric but also give me a way to study rhetoric from other authors and improve my writing skills. At the same time, I’ve seen the writing styles of many authors and the varying degrees of persuasiveness that come with the different orders of rhetoric. Following their writing, I create my own rhetoric format. Based on this form, I forget to use rhetoric less and less, my writing also becomes more organized.

Among the many articles I have written, my favorite is a rhetorical analysis, which will be of great help to my writing in the future. It taught me a lot about rhetorical devices that I wouldn’t have considered before. For example, in rhetorical analysis, what I pay most attention to is the audience part, which makes me clearly know which group I want to let accept and understand my ideas.

What I learn from this lesson is more than just a few words. This semester, I prefer writing essays, this sounds impossible for new immigration students, but that surprises me too. I feel writing becomes an easier thing to me if I find the way, my writing is more like my diary, there always reflecting my style, my personality, or my reaction to something. Writing a long assignment is not an impossible thing anymore, might I still need to keep studying it, but it is not a monster to me now.
